Dear Patagonia,

I bought this vest about 15 years ago in NYC. I was into skateboarding at the time and was always out on the streets with my skateboard and cameras. I especially liked the reflector on the neck, which was great for being traffic in NYC. A few years ago I found this vest while cleaning the closet and started wearing it whenever I go climbing; it’s become my favorite again. I don’t have to worry about scratching or tearing it like a soft shell or down vest. On my recent trip to Joshua Tree, I wore it almost every day. One day while climbing ‘The Waterchute’ with the vest on, I found that for the first time I was comfortable in a chimney climb. This old vest seems more durable than modern jackets and it worked better on a classic climb!

Year after year, try after try, this climb has proven to be the greatest struggle of my climbing career. I have sat under this boulder many times wondering if I would ever climb it, and debated just giving up. The challenge is what keeps me going, keeps me striving to become a better climber so that one day will everything will come together perfectly. I will never give up on this climb and can’t wait for the journey it will take to one day climb it. Thanks to all of my amazing sponsors for believing in me over the years as I continue to push myself in the sport we are all so overly obsessed with. #bouldering @prana @evolvusa @asanaclimbing @clifbarcompany @frictionlabs @blackdiamond @sendclimbing photo: @alexandrasimone_photography (at Rocky Mountain National Park)

“Climbing teaches us persistence and courage, while building confidence. When an ascent has gone well, it can bring an intense feeling of satisfaction, but a precarious ascent can bring fear. We may need to make meaningful decisions rapidly and a commitment to continue or descend. Strategy may be more important than strength, endurance, or quickness. The addition of risk brings out a special alertness—one similar to hunting a dangerous beast. As David Roberts has pointed out in The Mountain of My Fear, without risk, climbing would be just another game.”From the Forward to Fred Beckey’s 100 Favorite North American Climbs
