climb-casedia-climb: Finally. Commitment is a funny thing....

Finally. Commitment is a funny thing.
Today I got over myself and finally committed to throw to the massive jug that felt so far away for the last few years.
On another note, I got this sweet shirt from @midpineproject down in Phoenix. Not only is it super soft but the proceeds help build a well in Cambodia.

This holiday season, our day-long experiential education programs, our Winter Adventures, will be exploring and teaching our kids about holiday and Christmas traditions from around the world.

Here’s just a few of them:

In the city of Gävle, a huge straw goat is built every year for the start of Advent. On this day, we’ll each learn to make the traditional Swedish Yule goat to take home.

In Denmark, there are 24 small gifts for the children hidden in the calendar: one for each day until Christmas Eve. To teach our BKB kids about the true meaning of the holidays, we’ll design a calendar that counts down to Christmas with daily acts of kindness instead of gifts.

In France, a Nativity crib is often used to help decorate the house. French cribs have clay figures in them. During December some towns and cities have fairs that sell Nativity figures. During this adventure day your child will use two of the five STEAM skills to create air dry clay and design their own clay figures.

There is a century-old ritual (which began after a spectacular harvest) in Spain where at the stroke of midnight, Spaniards eat one grape for each toll of the clock. The good harvest is celebrated in the hope of attracting luck and riches in the coming year. Through hands-on building and circuits, we’ll bring together creativity, engineering, and most importantly, fun!

Despite its name, Boxing Day has nothing to do with pugilistic competition. As servants prepared to leave to visit their families, their employers would present them with gift boxes. Your kids will design and put together boxes to collect canned goods and books. The filled boxes will be donated to community organizations that help those in need.

At BKB, inspiration and progression stems from within. In India, Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a five-day celebration where Hindus light candles to give thanks for the blessings of the past year and illuminate good fortune in the next. Climbers will design their own candles to take home, then light up our party room with one thing that makes them shine and one thing that they hope to improve on in the last days of 2016.

In Japan, Vernal Equinox day, also known as Shunbun no Hi, is a day when the sun crosses the equator, making night and day equal in length. Your climber will have a blast learning about Japanese culture and making moon rocks.

Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda
Let’s head to East Africa as we learn about Kwanzaa! Kwanzaa’s seven days of celebration focus on seven principles or goals: unity (umoja), self-determination (kujichagulia), collective work and responsibility (ujima), cooperative economics (ujamaa), purpose (nia), creativity (kuumba), and faith (imani). Climbers will create poetry of their own and practice public speaking as they share their works of art.

Take a trip to Mexico, to join our Posada party. One game that is often played at Posada parties is piñata. Climbers will gain knowledge about the Mexican culture and learn to make their own piñatas.

On the 15th day of the month of Shvat, many Jewish people throughout the world celebrate the end of the rainy season by planting trees known as Tu B’shevat, a Tree-Planting Ritual. On our last adventure day before the new year, we teach your climbers to grow their own plant to take home as a way of acknowledging new beginnings.

Can you guys keep a secret? I didn’t flash this climb, nor did I do it second or third go. #trexarms
#throwback (I know, it’s Monday) to Porkchop. I can’t wait for the semester to be over and I get to climb… on anything. It might be time for the first trip of the season to Red Rocks. December’s not too late?

Sometimes you feel so deeply that you begin to wonder if anyone will understand the depths of your heart, the range of emotions that go on behind the scenes of your face. The chaos of ideas and struggles, the ever moving cycle of “what if’s” and “why’s” that seem to entangle you in a net that never seems to go away. So you feel all the pain of those around you, you remember the ache that has lived inside you for as long as you can remember, and you wait for someone to come along and look at you, saying “You are familiar, and I want to get to know you again.”

This is what we all want, to be seen and known, to be loved deeply as we feel deeply. To breathe and exhale without the fear that someone will leave when we have turned our back. We want a love that is as steady as our own breathing, and as life giving as the air we take in.

Hold on, dear heart, hold on for the one who will see you, and know you. Who will love you with a love that is familiar; because our hearts have known too many strangers who have tried to call our hearts a pitstop, when it is a home, waiting for someone to find their way to a place that is safe.
