97: Margo Hayes USA - Simon Lorenzi BEL 99: Janja Garnbret SLO - Giorgio Bendazzoli ITA 01: Ashima Shiraishi USA - Sam Avezou FRA Complete results 1. Slovenia took all medals in female -99 and their fourth participant was #5. This must be the greatest domination by a country in the Youth Worlds. Among the male -99, Italy had three guys in the Top-8. 2. Ashima Shiraishi topped all four routes but also Janja Garnbret, Margo Hayes, Same Avezou and Giorgio Bendazzoli won all four rounds. 3. Simon Lorenzi was the biggest sensational winner - he was #21 after the two qualification routes. 4. USA and Japan with eight finalists were the two best countries. Surprisingly, bad results for Austria, Spain and Germany.

I’ve been using Y&Y Belay Glasses and really liking the optics–they have slight magnification and very clear lenses. I was asked if I’d like to review the new Clip Up version which you can clip onto glasses, and at first I said no because I don’t wear glasses. Later that day I went climbing in the sun for the first time this season at Mill Creek and remembered that in winter it’s hard not to refract light directly into your eyes when using belay glasses, and it’s even harder trying to prop belay glasses over your sunglasses. I was very happy that the offer still stood to try the Clip Ups!

My friend Lisa is not a fan of belay glasses, but she immediately grabbed the Clip Ups and put them on her sunglasses. It turns out, she thinks belay glasses are too committing and was instantly sold by the flip-up feature of these Clip Up lenses. I clipped them onto my sunglasses, and found that the weight of the Clip Ups causes the sunglasses to slide down my nose gradually. This is because my frames are a little big, but I was having to keep pushing the glasses back up, which was slightly annoying–this didn’t happen to Lisa, because her sunglasses fit better.

Overall, I think the Clip Ups are great for specialized use–people who wear prescription glasses, people belaying in winter sun and people who feel trapped by regular belay glasses and want to be able to flip them up (this may only be Lisa?). We also have a friend who has a degenerative disease that doesn’t allow him to lift his head (he still climbs) and we are excited to pass them to him to see if they help him with climbing.

The optics of the Clip Ups are just as good as the standard Y&Y belay glasses, and they come in a very nice little zip up case with a small toy biner on it. They definitely get points for minimalism–for those who are shaving weight when packing for a trip or just can’t resist nifty little gadgets, they’d be a good addition to the climbing essentials.

I love grilled vegetables for breakfast. I live for freshly cracked eggs sizzling in a cast iron pan. I dream about overnight oats drizzled with honey and blueberries. I make a plan each night to wake up early so I can savor my morning meal.

But, most days, I have cereal for breakfast and a smoothie in an insulated mug. To go.

Because my husband and I both work full time (albeit my desk is at home or in the van), we have to fit mountain biking, climbing, and general outdoor shenanigans in before or after work. That means waking up extra early or getting after it while everyone else is sitting down to dinner.

Which, consequently, means we end up eating a lot of apples, beef jerky and protein bars to hold us over until we can make it to the oven or the grill. We are self-proclaimed “bar” experts (and by experts I mean we’ve eaten the best of them, and we’ve eaten the worst of them).

Ok, then where are all the bar reviews? To be honest, we have a lot of offers to partner up with food companies, but it’s a rare day when we like something enough to go through with it.

Enter: Mighty Organic Mighty Bar. Certified organic and 100-percent grass-fed beef with eight grams of protein and no GMOs. Real, simple, readable ingredients like uncured bacon, organic apples, sunflower seeds, sea salt and cracked pepper.  No “*goop.”

*Goop= synthetic hormones, toxic pesticides, other nasties.

I tried two flavors: Uncured Bacon and Apple, and Cranberry Sunflower Seed, and the former was my favorite—the taste wasn’t overwhelming, just a little sweet and plenty savory. The texture is somewhere between beef jerky and a typical energy bar, making them mess-free to eat on the go. The bars are individually packed and easy to open (the packaging just peels apart so you don’t have to gnaw at the plastic with your teeth) but not easy enough to open that they’ll make an unintended mess inside your pack. I carried mine in my pockets for a quick snack mid-mountain-bike ride.

Meat is not for everyone, and not everyone enjoys bars. For me, these are healthy snacks that taste gourmet but can get down-and-dirty with our early morning and end-of-the-day adventures, the ones that happen between a bowl of cereal and a pan of bubbling eggs. They are, in my “expert” opinion, the ultimate hold-me-over snack for between-meal moments—they fill you up but don’t make you feel heavy or “stuffed.” Not too light, not too heavy.

Which is why I keep the van well stocked with them. Brunch can wait for the weekends. Life can’t.
