“The highest compliment that you can pay me is to say that I work hard every day, that I never dog it.” -Wayne Gretzky. This has always been one of my favorite quotes. Training isn’t easy, but it is always worth it :)

What was the most challenging obstacle at Savage Games for you?

I think the most challenging obstacle at the Savage Games for our team was probably flipping over the tarp.  Most of our team are big athletic guys with a lot of body to fit on that square.

Your team has won both Queensbridge Savage Games so far – what qualities do you think make somebody a good teammate?

I think a good teammate is someone who is well rounded and really puts in the work.  A lot of us do so many different things every week to stay and shape, and I think that kind of versatility is essential to being good at something like the Savage Games that presents so many different physical and mental challenges.

Do you think cross-training has made you a better climber, or that climbing has been an important part of your cross-training for other sports?

I think cross-training has given me the ability to able to be a good climber.  Climbing for me is all about putting in the time though.  It’s one sport you don’t really start off good at.  You have to build the endurance, but I love the journey.  Climbing has turned out to be an integral part off my cross training for other sports though as well.  My grip strength, core strength, and mental strength has greatly improved since I’ve started climbing, and now I’m addicted to the process of getting better.

How do you recover on your rest days?

The gym I work at, Tone House, has some recovery programs that have helped me recover faster.  Some include, Normatech boots (compression), a cold tub (ice bath), and trigger point training that involves SMR (Self Myofascial Release) via a foam roller.  These three modes of recovery have been great ways to get my body back after exercise.

What are the primary modalities of your workout regimen (boxing? running? suspension training? etc)

My primary modalities include:

  • Tone House – High Intensity Sports Conditioning/ Functional Movement Training
  • Brooklyn Boulders – Climbing/ Plyometrics
  • ShadowBox/ Rumble – Boxing Studios
  • Equinox – Weight Lifting

Do you ever go through slumps in your training when you think, ‘I’m tired, I just don’t want to do this today/right now/this week’? If so, how do you motivate yourself (or each other) to get past that slump?

Honestly going on Instagram and looking at fitness pages until I feel bad for not going to the gym works a lot of the time for me.  Other people’s pages, videos, etc motivate me to get off the couch and go train.  Also, a lot of my friends are trainers at different gyms and studios and I know when I see them constantly putting in the work, I CAN’T slack off.

Do you carry any particular snacks, hydration boosters, or fitness fuel that keep you going during the day?

My friends over at @Deliciouslyfitgrill keep me fueled up during the day with their awesome meal prep services.  Nothing better than smashing a workout and then a healthy meal thats been prepared and ready to go.  As far as hydration, I love me some @wellwell juice recovery.

Do you have a favorite breakfast that gets you going in the morning, or a favorite dinner that refuels you at the end of the day?

Lately for breakfast I’ve been doing 1 omelette with turkey bacon with cinnamon, peppers, and dairy free mozzarella cheese melted inside.  Two sausage links and one Trader Joe gluten free waffle.  To go with, a chocolate paleo protein shake with bananas, almond butter, glutamine, and chia seeds. Dinner – usually a meal from Deliciously fit grill or my other go to, Salmon, green beans, and sweet potatoes.

Do you plan on defending your title as reigning champions on April 1st?!

YOU KNOW IT!! GOING FOR THE 3-PEAT!  #DYNASTYMODE

What was the most challenging obstacle at Savage Games for you?

I’d say the most challenging obstacle for our team at the last savage games was the one where we all had to stand on the tarp and flip it over.  We’re all big guys so it was hard for us to all fit and maneuver around on there.

Your team has won both Queensbridge Savage Games so far – what qualities do you think make somebody a good teammate?

We’re lucky to have had great teammates on both our teams so far.  For the first Savage Games Evan and I showed up and were paired with 3 random people.  For the second games we decided to put together our own team.  I think a great teammate for the savage games is someone who is willing to work hard and give it all they have.  When choosing our team we choose people who all have a great work ethic and some experience training on obstacles and climbing.

Do you think cross-training has made you a better climber, or that climbing has been an important part of your cross-training for other sports?

Climbing has definitely made me stronger and better at all of the different workouts I do.  For one I have definitely noticed my grip and core strength have improved since I started climbing a year ago.  The cool part about climbing is your applying strength in so many different positions and angles that typical strength training can’t account for.

How do you recover on your rest days?

I love massages on rest days.  Ive also have just gotten into trigger point acupuncture which Im finding really helps my muscles and body recover.

What are the primary modalities of your workout regimen (boxing? running? suspension training? etc)

When it comes to my workouts I really do blend in a bunch of different styles of training.  Each week is a little different but I try to always incorporate a blend of body weight training, sprinting, strength training, and core training.  I also try and take Evans class at Townhouse once or twice a week.  Wednesdays at 330p is when you can find me and some of our other Six Pack Savages teammates in class every week!

Do you ever go through slumps in your training when you think, ‘I’m tired, I just don’t want to do this today/right now/this week’? If so, how do you motivate yourself (or each other) to get past that slump?

Yeah for sure.  I find the best way to motivate myself is to workout with someone else.  Having someone around keeps me more accountable and helps me push a little harder then I would working out alone.

Do you have a favorite breakfast that gets you going in the morning, or a favorite dinner that refuels you at the end of the day?

Yes my go to breakfast is 1 packet of organic oatmeal, 1 scoop of Garden of Life Raw Protein, and 1 scoop of Smart Fiber mixed with some almond butter.  I have this almost every day and it keeps me full for a while so I don’t have to worry about eating til the afternoon.

Do you plan on defending your title as reigning champions on April 1st?!

We 100% plan on defending our title!!

If you climb long enough, you’re going to at least tweak a finger.  For most climbers, when we injure a finger the immediate reaction is to think we need to take some time off climbing to let things heal.  If […]
