Peter Crane, who started the petition Cancel the IFSC Live-streaming subscription fee, which 12 000 have signed, has been in contact with IFSC directly. Based on the communication and the lack of answers, Peter has written a very critical article under the headline, Behind the Deal – is the IFSC President hiding?, which ends. "On the IFSC homepage, Marco Maria Scolaris (IFSC President) promotes "good governance", "transparency" and "athletes [sic] inclusion in the IF decision-making processes at all levels". Marco Maria Scolaris' job as IFSC President is to govern in a way that reflects those values, not to do the opposite. In this sense, we believe he has failed as IFSC President. With climbing en route to the Olympics, we feel the federation needs a stronger, more qualified leadership team than ever – and one that practices the values it preaches. Marco Maria Scolaris, if you are listening, come out of the dark and give the international community the honest, transparent response they deserve." The article also links to Liam Lonsdale - BREAKING IT DOWN: THE IFSC PAYWALL FIASCO. (c) Eddie Fowke

Crazy, fun problem we were all working today

Shauna Coxsey bounced back from her 2016 injury with a sweep of all four finals problems at IFSC Bouldering World Cup Meiringen, and Kokoro Fujii returned to the top of the podium with three crucial bonus holds.

After hosting the first event last year, Meiringen opened 2017 with another fantastic show of sport climbing. Elite athletes from around the globe pushed themselves to the limit until the very end, giving an exciting window into their form this season.

Highlights, replays, results and more can be found on the Meiringen event page.

Who are you and how did you get to Brooklyn?

I’m Neal Mann, I moved to Brooklyn five years ago from London. I’m British originally and moved over here for a job which back then was as a journalist for The Wall Street Journal. I now work for Anomaly, a creative agency, as Director of Content Strategy.

Awesome. How did you start climbing?

My dad was a mountaineer and climber so I used to spend a lot of time in the mountains as a kid, strangely though I didn’t fully get into climbing until my late teens. I think I’d been too involved in other more traditionally sports. I really got heavily into it at uni in the north of England and did my postgrad in Sheffield – one of the best climbing scenes in the world.

The sport dominated my life in my twenties and I’m a training addict so as my career took off it eventually became too much for me and I gave it up for five years. I’d been covering the Arab Spring as a journalist in 2011 and I think it was too much to do alongside climbing full time. I really got back into it this January as there are too many 5-star lines close to NYC to ignore. That’s also when I decided to launch The Project Magazine.

It looks so good. So it seems like climbing has influenced your career in a big way.

I wouldn’t be doing the job I am now and living in NYC if it weren’t for climbing. My parents bought me a video camera to shoot climbing films with, I loved it and it ultimately led to me training as a TV journalist and my eventual career.

That’s also why I’m launching The Project Magazine.

Climbing is by nature a really creative sport – particularly bouldering. You spend so much time standing around that so many people pick up a camera and learn to shoot photography and film. I think there are a lot of people out there who wouldn’t have done that without the sport, I most likely wouldn’t be where I am without it.

I felt there was an opportunity to launch a collaborative platform for those people to showcase their work in climbing on a platform better than an Instagram or Facebook feed. It was also a great opportunity for me to pass my skills onto people who haven’t been as fortunate as me to have the career and experience I have.

Congratulations on your launch! We’re excited to see what comes next. What are your current biggest projects, on and off the wall?

I’m getting married in July, so to be honest organizing that is the biggest project I’ve ever had. I’m also trying to get back to my old strength levels by the fall as I’d like to do some of the North East classics like Something From Nothing on the speed boulder at Great Barrington.

Awesome. Last question – who or what inspires you?

I’m inspired by people trying to do things differently and progress. A huge part of the site is about highlighting creative people within the climbing community – many of which just do their own thing on a corner of the internet, which is inspiring to me.

Climbing-wise, there are a few people who really inspire me – Mina Leslie-wujastyk in the UK who features in The Project Magazine’s first film is an incredibly climber, she always gives it her all. I always enjoy having a session with Ty Landman. We’ve known each other for years but it never ceases to amaze me how he moves on rock, he’s probably the most natural climber I’ve ever seen.

Who are you and how did you get to Brooklyn?
I’m a Brooklyn Boulders Gowanus regular who sometimes climbs at Queensbridge, and Somerville when visiting family. I went to school here in New York and then moved away for about 14 years.  I decided to move back to New York a few years ago while suffering from food poisoning while traveling.  Being sick when you’re far from home makes you long for the people you’ve left behind.  For me, those people were in Brooklyn.

Home is all about where your people are. How did you start climbing?

In college, my friends brought me to this little top-rope wall near Lincoln Center called Harmony Atrium. Climbing wasn’t as popular then, and none of us knew what we were doing. I loved it, but didn’t really have room for it in my life, so it was a once or twice every few years kind of thing. My best friend Casey joined BKB shortly after it opened in 2009, and I started to climb with him while vacationing in the city.

How has climbing changed your life?

Moving back to New York was tough. We all know how stressful this city can be. While I was job hunting (never a fun time), I came into BKB to blow off some steam.  Cash was a little tight after the move so I was only going to climb one day, but I discovered that I had an unexpired 10-pack. That was pretty much what got me through the next few weeks. I’ve been a member ever since.

Climbing has been a way for me to shake off the work day, stay in shape and, most importantly, spend some quality time with my best friend.

What are your current biggest projects, on and off the wall?
On the wall, I’m perpetually stuck at the v4/v5 plateau. Every time I start to improve, I get hit with an injury or other set-back, but I don’t mind that much.  My goal is to just stay healthy enough to keep on climbing for as long as I can, and to try to improve a little bit each time.

Off the wall, I’m trying to get more involved in giving back to the community, which is why I’m fundraising for 826NYC. They’re a non-profit dedicated to supporting students ages 6 – 18 with their writing skills, and they also help teachers inspire their students to write. Check out their Superhero Supply Co. on 5th Ave between 5th and 6th.

On April 19, 826NYC is hosting a “trivia night for cheaters”, where participants to help them raise funding to support their programs.  If you’re able to support this great cause, I’d really appreciate the help.  Here’s the link to my fundraising page; the more my trivia team raises, the more we are allowed to “cheat” on trivia night.  I suck at trivia.  I need the extra help!

Who or what inspires you?
I see a lot of people here in New York really putting themselves out there and making things happen. They’re starting their own companies, creating art, getting politically active, and giving back to the community. It seems to me like people in this city are more apt to be engaged and involved, and it’s a major reason I moved back.

Maybe it’s the crowds and diversity that inspires us to come together, maybe it’s that only-in-New-York feeling that there’s always an amazing secret to be discovered just around the corner, but there’s something about this place that brings out the best in us.

Please support David’s fundraising efforts here and say hi to him next time you’re at Brooklyn Boulders in Gowanus!

Funny how we get attached to goals; that once accomplished both leave us complete yet somehow further longing - as though chasing the goal itself is what we wanted the whole time - living in the limbo of possibility.
