I was glad my friend Peter readily accepted to partner up for the Red Dihedral at the Incredible Hulk. It was Peter’s second multi pitch climb! He was a trooper and climbed it successfully.

We camped at North Robinson Creek the first night. The next morning at 8am, we went to the Ranger Station in Bridgeport to get an Wilderness Pass for the overnight stay.

Climbing the Red Dihedral Incredible Hulk Trip Report - July 27 2017

We started hiking in from the Mono Village campgrounds around 10a and completed the approach in 3 and half hours. It was 5 miles and 2,500 ft of vertical gain. The first half is 2.5 of easy trail and the last 2.5 miles was a fairly steep approach of talus fields and snow.

We setup our camp and saw a few climbers just finishing including Peter Croft! He just finished Beeline was heading out.

The next morning, we started at 730a at the base of the route. We used the High Sierras SuperTopo book as a reference.

Climbing the Red Dihedral Incredible Hulk Trip Report - July 27 2017Climbing the Red Dihedral Incredible Hulk Trip Report - July 27 2017

Pitches 1-3 can be linked to put you right below the Red Dihedral if you hike up the 3rd class start enough.
Pitch 4 “the Red Dihedral” was done alone as I used most of the protection and it’ll be easier to communicate.
Pitches 5-6 was linked.
Pitches 7-9 was linked.
Pitch 10 was done alone to get to the false ridge summit.
Pitches 11 and 12 had to be done in two short pitches if you are doing the 5.6 chimney version. Otherwise there will be bad rope drag.

The fun pitches were the Red Dihedral 4th pitch and the splitter 10a hand crack 7th pitch. Most of the other pitches were fairly easy sub-5.8 climbing.

Climbing the Red Dihedral Incredible Hulk Trip Report - July 27 2017

We topped out around 430p. Peter was starting to feel the effects of dehydration and the altitude. We ran out of our 50 fl oz water around pitch 7. We resorted to digging into the snow and stuffing it into our hydration pack to melt and drink. We signed the journal, took a selfie and started finding the descent route.

Climbing the Red Dihedral Incredible Hulk Trip Report - July 27 2017

For the descent, start heading south and you’ll run into a carin. Start down-climbing in this direction and you’ll see another carin. From here turn east towards the gully and we ran into a fixed nut and cam setup which we used to get into the gully. We tested it and decided to use it since we couldn’t find the 2 bolt anchor mentioned in the SuperTopo book. A 70m rope just got us to the gully!

Climbing the Red Dihedral Incredible Hulk Trip Report - July 27 2017

After getting into the gully, we found the descent has incredibly loose rocks with snow patches here and there. With two people, it helps to have one person ahead so the rock slides doesn’t slam into the other person.

I went first and was able jog ahead to start packing the tent up so we could start the hike back asap as sun was starting to go down. We started hiking out from the base camp around 630p. The descent probably took longer because of the snow patches. We got to the Robinson Creek stream crossing around 820p so there was a little light left. We walked the reminder of the Barney Lake Trail path in the dark and got back to the car around 930p.

All and in, a successful alpine climb!

I recommend using a 70m rope and doing it car to car with an early morning start. You can also bring a lot of small cams to help link up the pitches.

Working through the moves on Vision Thing in Rifle for this years 4th of July

claire-bukowski: ✨Story Time✨ I took my first fall on trad gear...

claire-bukowski:

✨Story Time✨
I took my first fall on trad gear on this crack when we went to Indian Creek in April. I always thought I’d be completely terrified after taking my first fall on gear, but that wasn’t the main emotion I felt. Instead, I was super frustrated over the fact that I was struggling SO much on a 5.9 called “Warm-Up”. I felt like I was trying so hard, and contorting my body into all of these awkward positions, just to move up 1-2 feet. Crack climbing is HARD. I wish I could be one of those girls that just crushes 5.11 their first time in the creek, but that simply isn’t me. Something about the perfectly smooth cracks and lack of holds hasn’t clicked yet in my mind, but that won’t stop me from coming back to this beautiful place.
